Breath-Centric Yoga

Knowledge and tradition of yoga is learned and handed down from teacher to student. Professor Krishmacharya, his son TKV Desikachar, and a devoted student of both, Leslie Kaminoff, all relied on the fundamental truth that breath is the core of everything. Their teachings provide an integrated view of breath as it relates to yoga practice, breath as it relates to movement and finally breath as it relates to the fundamental deepest principles of yoga itself.

At ATHA we embrace and combine this knowledge with modern approaches to mental and physical well-being, and offer a transformational breath-centric approach that can be tailored to meet the needs of the student.

Yoga Teacher Training Yoga Alliance Compliant: 200 Hours

ATHA offers 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training and is registered with Yoga Alliance, USA (RYS 200). We provide in-depth training in the practices of Yoga. The intensive program is designed to encourage students to delve deeper into the dimensions of Yoga through extensive study of asanas, pranayama, meditation, yoga philosophy, and appropriate teaching methodologies.

For every individual, Yoga is a personal journey. Every one of us is unique and therefore Yoga is a personal practice. Through our Teacher Training programme we aim to create this awareness in all our participants, so that as potential teachers they are able to adapt the practices to suit their individual needs and the needs of others to discover their highest potential. You graduate ATHA as mindful and compassionate teachers.

Trauma Informed Yoga and Teaching Practices

ATHA uses a “Trauma Informed” approach in all that we do. We partner closely with organizations to increase cultural competency and knowledge of special populations such as first responders, healthcare workers, schools and teachers and other trauma prone arenas such as domestic violence, Post Traumatic Stress Disorders and injuries, illnesses and chronic pain.

Certified in Tactical Stress Resilience® techniques, we are compassionate and thoughtful about the language and approach we use to teach others, taking any special needs into consideration. Yoga is a practice that can be adapted to individuals and to groups.

An example of this would be teaching a group of firefighters, utilizing terminology that is relevant to their work and adapting practices to help them conserve breath while on the job (because in fire, breath is life) yet also how to down regulate when off the job.

  • We can bring classes to your institution or agency to demonstrate simple yet powerful techniques to be used on the job, that don’t require a lot of time or money investment. In this way we meet your employees where they are, providing bite sized practical (tactical) methods of stress mitigation and inoculation.
  • Survivors of domestic abuse can carry a lot of stress in their minds and bodies, leading to hypervigilance and unhelpful pain and anxiety.  We can provide compassionate instruction on how to down regulate the nervous system, regain agency over one’s body and make choices based upon needs in the moment, thereby empowering students to take risks and live life again, while also increasing self-knowledge and understanding.
  • Our trauma informed approach reduces barriers to the practice of yoga and allows for customization of teachings, in a language that is culturally appropriate and easy to understand while also being immediately applicable to the daily lives of your employees both on and off the job. This increases their wellness and mindfulness skillset, focus, ability to self-regulate and problem solve in the moment. We can’t eliminate all stress…but we can work to lessen its effects!
